Daihatsu x Badminton

Why Badminton?

As you know, Daihatsu is a Japanese company, but it also develops business overseas.
In particular, Indonesia and Malaysia are the locations of important sites. Daihatsu values the cooperative relationship among these three countries, including Japan.
To strengthen this relationship, Daihatsu commenced a project to create “a new system that connects people beyond differences in country and culture.”
The person in charge of this project was Otaki-san (current president of Yamaguchi Daihatsu).

Otaki-san (current president of Yamaguchi Daihatsu)

Of course, friendly rivalry at work is important. But limiting ourselves to just that becomes a little suffocating, and it’s not sustainable.
That’s why I thought, rather than something done out of obligation, what we needed was “something that everyone could enjoy and get excited about together”.

Thus, what we focused on was a sport loved in all three countries: badminton.
This was how our support for badminton began in 2017.
After that, with goals such as creating a pleasant working environment for everyone and producing a ripple effect on employees by supporting athletes, this initiative eventually expanded to support for para-badminton as well.

Para-Badminton Athletes Belonging to Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd.

We have received messages from five Daihatsu para-badminton athletes playing on the global stage. We will introduce each of them below along with a simple profile!

Daisuke Fujihara-san, Human Resources Div.

Every word of support we receive is a great source of energy for us! If you have the chance, I hope you will come to watch a match in person.

Taiyou Imai-san, Fleet Sales Div.

I am not a very skillful athlete, but I want to show everyone my tenacious and unique style of play. I’d be happy if people see that and think, “This guy is working hard!”

Shiho Sawada-san, Fleet Sales Div.

I feel that everyone’s support is my greatest strength. I will be happy if I can bring back a medal and make everyone who supports me smile.

Daiki Kajiwara-san, Fleet Sales Div.

I hope my performance can bring good news to the company and make everyone smile, even just a little. I will play with all my strength so I can express my daily gratitude!

Sena Tomoyose-san, Fleet Sales Div.

Now that I’m representing Daihatsu, my desire to perform even better has grown stronger. I’d be happy if seeing me challenge myself motivates others to do their best too—even if it’s just a small spark of courage!

Featured New Employee Athlete “Sena Tomoyose-san”!

Tomoyose-san is a 19-year-old new employee who joined the company in April 2025.

While playing on the world stage, she is also a brand-new first-year working member of society.
As a member of the Fleet Sales Division, she comes into the office about twice a week. At the same time, she is making rapid growth every day as an athlete.
Her world ranking, which was 16th before joining the company, has risen to 4th!
Even amid changing environments, she continues to take on challenges while balancing competition and work. What kind of athlete is she, exactly?
In the video below, she talks about things that cannot be fully expressed in text, such as what made her start playing badminton, the secret to her strength, and what she cherishes every day. Please take a look.
You may feel closer to Tomoyose-san, who might otherwise seem like a distant figure as a world-ranked athlete.

Who is the Real Sena Tomoyose-san?

She works hard at everything with a pure and single-minded dedication toward her goals. This is what makes her truly shine and inspires others to watch her grow.

Everyone in the Fleet Sales Div. where she belongs talks about Tomoyose-san’s personality in this way.
We asked people around her about who the real Tomoyose-san is—not as an athlete.

What is Tomoyose-san like usually?

Uchida-san Fleet Sales Div.

When she comes to the office, we eat lunch together and chat. She is friendly and cheerful, and I have the impression that she works very hard as well.

Yamamoto-san Fleet Sales Div.

While balancing work and competition, she is also challenging herself to obtain a driver’s license. I find her attitude of taking everything seriously very wonderful.

As a colleague, what do you think about Tomoyose-san doing her best on the big stage?

Ishikawa-san Fleet Sales Div.

She has a special presence as an athlete active on the front line, but she also values everyday enjoyment. That natural side of her really captured my heart.

Tojo-san Fleet Sales Div.

It was very impressive to see her with a truly happy expression after winning the bronze medal.
When I said, “Next up is gold,” she answered strongly, “Yes, I will do my best.” Her straightforward attitude makes me want to support her.

Tomoyose-san Fleet Sales Div.

The reason I wanted to join Daihatsu was because I admired the athletes who compete while representing Daihatsu! Since joining, everyone in the workplace has been warm to me, and I feel it is a very comfortable environment. In the future, I want to produce results in my work as well and give back to Daihatsu!

Her charm goes beyond athletic ability. Her beloved personality, which makes people naturally want to support her, captivates everyone she meets.
Her favorite saying is “good fortune comes to those who smile”!
Just like those words, with her warm smile and straightforward attitude, she will surely continue to charm many more people.
Please continue to follow Tomoyose-san's future achievements!

Turning “the Power to Support” into “The Power to Move Forward”

As part of its support, Daihatsu is the title sponsor of the “Daihatsu Japan Para-Badminton Championships Tournament,” the highest-level tournament in Japan. The 11th tournament was held in Nagasaki in December 2025, with support from the local community, including Daihatsu Nagasaki Hanbai Co., Ltd.
At the tournament, employees from 3MASA, the Tokyo Branch, and the Ikeda Head Office, as well as local staff from Daihatsu Nagasaki Hanbai Co., Ltd. gathered, and voices supporting Daihatsu athletes echoed throughout the venue.

Daihatsu’s Passion Brings Energy to the Venue!

At the 11th Daihatsu Japan Para-Badminton Championships Tournament, all five athletes from Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. featured in this article participated and competed in fierce matches day after day.
We have put together a series of highlights, so please take a look!

Everyone won a medal! Congratulations, Daihatsu Badminton! 🎊

🥇 Daisuke Fujihara-san, Singles: Gold Medal / Doubles: Gold Medal

In moments when I was trailing and trying to catch up, I felt like the cheers were carrying me along, and I really felt the power of that support. When people come directly to the venue to show their support, it feels like the supporters and the athletes are connected, and we give strength to each other.

🥇 Taiyou Imai-san, Singles: Gold Medal / Doubles: Gold Medal

When there are cheers, it gives me the strength to endure time and time again, even in those tough moments when I’m telling myself to just keep holding on. Support truly becomes a great driving force, and I am grateful.

🥈 Shiho Sawada-san, Singles: Silver Medal

Even if people are far from the venue, the fact that they come to support gives me tremendous strength. Because of that support, I am strongly encouraged to do my best and keep enduring. The applause and cheers I hear the moment I score a point reach my ears clearly, and every single one of them encourages me to keep playing.

🥇 Daiki Kajiwara-san, Singles: Gold Medal / Doubles: Gold Medal

People not only from my division but also from other divisions gave me such warm encouragement. Before the tournament, they said, “Do your best” and “We’ll be there to watch you.” Many people came to the venue, and it gave me a lot of strength. These two days truly made me feel glad from the bottom of my heart that I joined Daihatsu Motor.

🥈 Sena Tomoyose-san, Singles: Silver Medal

This tournament was my first time participating as a Daihatsu employee, and I was delighted to see such a significant increase in the number of people cheering me on. It really motivated me to work even harder for the company. Even while I was playing, hearing those cheers from the stands was a huge source of support.

As a result, including Sawada-san who had returned to the competition after one year, everyone won medals. It was a wonderful outcome!
Those who watched up close let out cries of excitement.

Daihatsu Nagasaki Hanbai Co., Ltd.

Watching para-badminton live was a very valuable experience. Seeing the athletes compete while skillfully controlling their wheelchairs and the teamwork of the doubles combinations, we felt the results of their effort and practice, and our hearts were deeply moved. If there is another tournament where Daihatsu’s colleagues participate, we definitely want to go cheer them on again!

President Inoue-san

Thank you very much for the many moving moments and smiles! On Japan’s top stage, I was moved to see Daihatsu employee players fight strongly and keep winning. The teamwork of the five members and the Daihatsu cheering group that filled the gym were very impressive. I think they gave great strength to the players. Behind their success, there must be daily training and “Daihatsu Passion.” From now on, each Daihatsu Group employee should continue to support each other and move forward with passion in our hearts.

Congratulations to all the athletes!! And thank you for inspiring us✨

Colleagues who Became One Team Through “Support”

The athletes told us that our cheers give them strength.
At the same time, we also gain energy by supporting the athletes.

Para-badminton is the hottest right now! “Tokyo Office Fleet Sales Division”

Currently, there are four athletes in the Tokyo Office Fleet Sales Division.
The members of the Fleet Sales Division who work with the athletes support para-badminton with especially strong passion, and many of them traveled all the way to Nagasaki on the day of the Japan Championships in December.

We asked them about the positive energy they gained through showing their support, and we would like to share it with you!

The fun of supporting together with colleagues

By supporting the athletes together with colleagues, we can not only share our enjoyment of the sport, but we also deepen the bonds and sense of unity within the division. Having the shared experience of “supporting together” outside of work activates communication and leads to a positive atmosphere throughout the workplace. (Mori-san & Nishiyama-san, Fleet Sales Division)

Sharing the excitement of victory

What left a strong impression was the moment when an athlete won their first championship. Seeing them defeat an opponent they had never beaten before in the actual match was truly an exciting experience. It was an unforgettable moment where we all shared the joy of the athlete’s effort coming to fruition. (Takeuchi-san, Fleet Sales Division)

Universal awareness

Supporting para-sports has also become an opportunity to think about things from a universal perspective. An awareness of naturally paying attention to those around us in daily life has started to take root. (Namura-san & Sakashita-san, Fleet Sales Division)

Gaining inspiration from the same generation

Seeing people of the same generation give their all makes me want to also do my best in a positive way.” The presence of people of the same generation achieving results is a good source of inspiration. (Higaki-san, Fleet Sales Division)

Becoming Daihatsu’s One Team Through Support

The athletes’ challenges move the hearts of those who support them, and those cheers and actions in turn propel the athletes forward.
While listening to the stories of people who came to support at the venue, I was reminded of the words of Otaki-san, who started the badminton project.

Otaki-san (current president of Yamaguchi Daihatsu)

By supporting, we also gain energy ourselves—we want to keep this cycle going.
Through sports, this initiative creates connections that go beyond countries, regions, and disabilities, and increases employee vitality and a sense of unity.

Indeed, the tournament in Nagasaki marked a moment where the boundary between athletes and supporters was transcended, and we could see that becoming One Team means that the Daihatsu circle is expanding!

Conclusion | Send Your Support to the Athletes Too!

Through this interview, we learned that one person’s serious challenge has the power to move the hearts of those around them.
And knowing that our support also gives strength to the athletes, we strongly feel that we want to keep supporting them!
Interest in the athletes, watching matches, and offering words of encouragement—each small action supports the athletes, and at the same time, leads to our own strength to move forward!

▼ Send messages of support!

This form is for collecting feedback on this article and support messages for the para-badminton athletes.
A simple message like “do your best” or “we’re cheering for you” is the greatest source of encouragement for the athletes, so we would appreciate any and all submissions!

Column | Medals & Straps

As introduced in the article published in July 2025, “Proofs of Victory: Connecting and Weaving Local Communities, Daihatsu Metal, and Daihatsu,” original award medals are created by the Daihatsu Group every year for this tournament.
This year’s strap design contains the wish to “deliver something that remains in the athletes’ memories.
The main colors used are the three colors of the Daihatsu Badminton logo.

kizuna_005_10_1.png

In addition, features of local traditional crafts from the host location, Nagasaki, have been incorporated, resulting in a design that connects the region, the tournament, and the athletes.

The design is structured so that the logo colors appear no matter where it is cut, and careful attention has been paid to the combination of colors when cut, as well as the balance between lines and solid areas.
Also, within the design, a “hidden shuttlecock” and a “hidden castella” have been subtly included.
We packed in these playful touches, hoping that when someone notices them, it will naturally bring a smile to their face.

Ohoka-san

I designed it with the feeling of wanting to support and celebrate the athletes, but after watching them play, I was the one who became energized!

Through the production of the medal straps, I would like to help raise internal awareness of Daihatsu’s para-badminton and support many employees so they can gain energy from the athletes’ performances.
